BTS 2: How to Take Your Portrait Client From Consultation to Photo Shoot

Kara-.jpg

In BTS 2, I take you behind the scenes from what began as an informal conversation about doing a shoot one day to let’s do it it 2 weeks from tomorrow. Yikes! Sometimes you need a push to show you you’re capable. Sometimes the Universe has more trust in you than you have in yourself. Sometimes you should simply trust that you’ve done the work and that you can do the job. As a friend, who happened to be my client for this shoot once said, “God didn’t bring you this far, just to bring you this far!”

The dynamic combination of full intention, professionalism, and capability makes for a magnificent, high-energy photoshoot complete with dance moves not seen since the 80s.

Here are some highlights from this week’s episode.

{2:35} Now you could argue that two weeks is not a long time to plan a photoshoot but I think that can work in your favor.

{3:30} You never know the mood you're going to be in on that day, you know, on the day of your photoshoot, and that can influence their choices and what they'd like to be photographed in.

{4:56} Now, although I had asked her to bring her own outfits for the shoot, I had a few ideas of my own.

{7:35} I also used the album feature on my phone, which I've spoken about in another episode as far as creating albums of inspirational looks and poses that I found to be the most flattering specifically for this client. So this would come under mapping, only mapping specific to your subject to your client.

{11:18} One thing that was extremely touching was the fact that she brought items that belonged to her late mother, who I imagine would have been extremely proud to see her daughter strut herself in front of the camera the way she did.

{13:13} I really wanted to get in close and try to get a different type of perspective than what I usually use. So I brought up brought up my 85 millimeter 1.8 lens. I really liked using this lens.

Photos are either in different stages of retouching or straight out of camera (SOOC) and not retouched.

Around the Set: Fabrics purchased from Mood: Antique gold silk charmeuse, light blue-green silk chiffon, red silk chiffon; fabric covering settee; snack spread; and sani-station.

{14:43} Now I have to tell you that besides the lenses, the wardrobe, the great makeup, what contributed greatly to making this shoot such a success was movement.

{21;41} Treat your photoshoot like you're hosting an event for your client. Make them feel super duper special. Make your team members feel super duper special, because they're there to support your client and to support you. Show your gratitude.

{23:22} Show up to the photoshoot enthused, if you're not overjoyed to be someone's photographer, they're not going to be overjoyed to be your client.
