Hide That CARD!
There are a few things we take for granted in photography as we do with many other things in life. Somethings are so basic we seldom talk about them. Nevertheless, like everything we plan that should go off without a hitch, there’s always the chance that something can go wrong. In photography that can mean a mild inconvenience or a major disaster.
In this week’s episode, we talk about something that’s ultra basic: Your SD or memory storage card. It seems like an impossibility and the least likely thing to ever happen to a photographer, but I know of at least two occasions in which the photographer believed they had cards in their cameras only to find the card slots empty…and yes, I am one of those photographers.
In this week’s episode, Hide That Card!, I give you a sure-fire tip to make sure this never happens to you as well as some other critical tips when it comes to your cards. Here’s a summary:
If your camera has 2 slots for image storage, use both making the second slot either a duplicate of the first or JPEG format of the RAW images
Use the same size storage card in both slots: 2-16s, 2-32s etc.
Use a card holder or card wallet for extra cards in addition to the ones in your camera
Develop a system for the cards in your card holder. For example, in my card holder, cards that are face down have images that have not yet been uploaded. Some photographers choose to simply write on the card.
Keep an extra card in your wallet; your purse; your camera strap, if it has a hidden pouch; or your car. Hide That Card and forget about it until you need it!
